Flannel Shirts and Skinny Jeans - A Match Made In Heaven?!

Few combos are more indie than flannel shirts and skinny jeans. Like peanut butter and jelly, they are two good things which combine to form something incredible!! In fact, a quality pair of mens skinny jeans mated with a rustic vintage flannel shirt is probably even better than a PB&J sandwich. Actually, strike that. Not probably better, but definitely!

Just the other weekend I was at this local pizza joint, listening to some folksy music. Everyone there was a different flavor of hipster. You had your drug rug wearing deadbeats, your guy with a huge beard and suspenders, some dude driving a rickshaw, you name it. If it weren't for my tight Levi's and the green lumberjack-esque flannel I got for five bucks at JCPenny I would have been SO out of place. You see, skinny jeans and flannel saved my life in this situation!!

Perhaps it could save yours too.

Fashion Flannel

Truth is, not all flannel looks good. When you need to look your absolute best, there is no better plaid than Urban Outfitters. Though the durability and practicality of their clothing is questionable, not to mention the price, all of Urban Outfitter's flannel and plaid shirts are definitely indie in appearance and stylish.

If you're feeling daring, you can find some nice classy vintage flannel shirts on Etsy. Such as this gem I found. I was drawn to the clever name "The Steve McQueen" and this shirt evoked memories of The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape. FLANNEL!

Love, man

Heavy Duty Flannel Shirts - Maintain Your Indie in the Winter!

heavy duty flannel shirt
There comes a time in a man's life when your typical plaid indie flannel doesn't cut it. It's in these instances when you have to bring out the king of all flannels, the heavy duty flannel shirt.

Indie flannel shirtss come in several grades. You have your thin and fashionable plaid, the likes of which typically come from Urban Outfitters. Then you have your thriftshop flannel, which may not fit the way you want it, but hey, it's cheap! Then you've got your heavy duty, "I'm a lumberjack and I'm proud!" flannel. It's these shirts that separate the indie men from the indie boys.

Heavy weight flannel shirts are characterized by their thick fabric and general lumberjack appearance. But don't worry, they are still COMPLETELY indie. As an added benefit, you can maintain your indie persona in the winter months! Nothing better than breaking out your heavy weight flannel on a brisk November day and saying "Yeah, I'm indie."

For great advice on how to accessorize and compliment your indie flannel shirts, I recommend reading my How to be Indie guide!

Bargain Basement Thrift Shop Flannels

One of the cheapest and most reliable places to find flannel clothing is at your local thrift shop, such as Goodwill or Salvation Army. Here you can find flannel and plaid shirts of all sorts and sizes for all your indie hipster needs!! They have thicker flannels for the cold, brisk winter months and thinner indie plaid for the spring! They even have short sleeve plaid shirts for the summer months!

The best part about thrift shop flannels and plaids is the price!! You can frequently find shirts for as los as $2-3 a shirt. Perfect for recession fashion!

How to Dress Indie by Wearing Flannel or Plaid

Indie is in. And everyone loves hipsters!

So I, man, am here to turn you into a flannel-wearing, Pabst Blue Ribbon drinking, ever-ironic hipster!!! What is my method called? The indie flannel (mannel LOL) method!!!!

flannel lumberjacks

Flannel, once the domain of lumberjacks and working man has been hi-jacked by hipsters and indie kids! But that's ok, because flannel is more than just a fabric. It's a way of life, and these young pioneers are incorporating it into the masses. Now I own about 10-15 plaid flannel shirts, and I'm always searching for more. Flannel is the manliest fabric, and I happen to know the best stores and locations to purchase this rarity.

My flannel advice will come later, however. So keep vigilant!
